U2's Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Problem- Learners needed a tool that illustrated the connection between art and history to grasp the concept that art reflects the artist's experience at times and at others, it reflects the artist's commentary on a historical event or person.
Solution- A music video was needed that illustrated the content of the song using images of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Goals-
My Goal- Create a video for the song, Pride (In the Name of Love) by U2 to illustrate how artists use historical events or people as the subject of their work and how the song is a commentary on the event or person. The video must use images of the subject, MLK, Jr., to help the learner make the connection between the lyrics of the song and the subject.
Lesson Goal/Objective- After viewing the video, the learner will be able to identify how artists such as U2 use the lyrics of their songs to make commentary on historical events or people with 100% accuracy.
Process-
Needs Analysis- After check for understanding questions during a group discussion, it was clear the learners were not grasping the connections between art and history. As a result, the instructor needed a video to illustrate the concept being taught.
Lesson Design- The lesson this video is a part of is an in-person, gradual release of responsibility (GRR) lesson where this video is used as an example to illustrate the connections between art and history. The video is intended to enhance retention and transfer of the overall objective of the lesson by providing a concrete example.
Interactive Elements- The video is only a component of the overall lesson, and is intended for an in-person lesson. Therefore, the video does not contain interactive elements.
Tone & Accessibility- This component of the lesson does not have language other than the lyrics to the song. Therefore, the tone is that of the song, a rock anthem. A purchased license to Camtasia will allow the generation of captions.
Authoring Tools- Camtasia was used to create the video. Images were saved from Google Images. The music WAV file was captured from a personal purchase of the song via iTunes. *I do not own the rights to the music or the images used in this video. It is for educational purposes only.
