How to Spot a Phishing Email

Microlearning Lesson

Problem- Recently, the organization has seen a rise in phishing emails getting past the cybersecurity blocks. As a result, the IT department requested a microlearning lesson to remind individuals within the organization of the procedures to follow when receiving a potential phishing email.

Solution- I created a short lesson to remind individuals how to identify a phishing email and then what to do with it within the email system.

Goals

My Goal- To create an effective microlearning lesson that educates the learner about the process of identifying and removing a phishing email from the organization's system.

Learner Goal- By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:

a) identify a phishing email by its attributes, such as an incorrect email for the individual sending the email,

b) explain why it is dangerous to click on any links within a phishing email,

c) and know the process for reporting the email and removing it from their account with 100% accuracy.

Process

Needs Analysis- The IT department's data showed that most of the phishing emails opened included a link with malware, and 5 included possible Trojan Horses with ransomware. As a result, it was evident that the staff needed a reminder of how to identify phishing emails and how to report and remove them.

Lesson Design- The lesson uses reinforcement via a short, microlearning lesson with a visual example of a phishing email. The lesson includes knowledge checks to ensure the learner understands the content.

Interactive Elements- The lesson contains an accordion feature to show detailed information about phishing emails. There are two multiple-choice knowledge checks and a sorting/true-false activity to test the learner's knowledge.

Tone & Accessibility- The tone is professional, but simple. The language used is free of jargon and defines phrases that would be unfamiliar to the learner.

Authoring Tools- The microlearning lesson was created using Articulate Rise 360 and is hosted using Google Cloud.
