Problem- Students lacked an understanding of the use of music to protest social and cultural issues during the 20th century.
Solution- Create an interactive PowerPoint presentation with examples linked within.
Goals-
My Goal- I will create a user-friendly, interactive PowerPoint presentation that explores the impact of 20th century protest music.
Lesson Goal/Objective- At the completion of the presentation, the student will be able to explain the purpose and impact of 20th century protest music with 100% accuracy.
Process-
Needs Analysis- After analyzing the Unit 4 exam in U.S. History, it was determined that students struggled with understanding the connection between popular culture and social/cultural issues. Students were successful at identifying other methods of protest, such as marching or sit-ins, but did not identify songs as a form of protest. Therefore, it was determined that a lesson on protest music and its impact was needed.
Lesson Design- The lesson was designed to be used for whole group, live instruction, using gradual release instruction, aka I do, we do, you do, or assigned individually with the guiding questions. The lesson is divided into how to use the five guiding analysis questions and social issues/movements to make it easier for the students to connect the issues of the movement with the lyrics of each song. A 21st-century example for each question is linked on the slide. There are multiple songs linked to the three featured movements.
Interactive Elements- The lyrics and videos of each song are linked within the slides. In order to analyze the song, learners will need to click on the video and lyrics links.
Tone and Accessibility- The tone of the lesson is academic, but simple. For accessibility, all songs have lyrics attached and images are labeled.
Authoring- This was created using Microsoft PowerPoint and YouTube. *I do not own the rights to any music or video used in the presentation. It is for educational purposes only.
